CARRIE BY STEPHEN KING

077ae3adac9bfd2e75906ba2b5dcf4d9

This is the Stephen Kings first published novel. Its one of those things that come in small packages but make a big impact so don’t let the brevity of the book  fool you. The movie adaptations of this book are also quite popular.

STUFF ON THE BACKCOVER SAYS

Carrie knew she should not use the terrifying power she possessed… But one night at her senior prom, Carrie was scorned and humiliated just one time too many, and in a fit of uncontrollable fury she turned her clandestine game into a weapon of horror and destruction..

PLOT IN SHORT

Mr. King uses a series of articles, reports and books to string together a telekinetic catastrophe that occurs in Maine on a prom night due to our heroine or should I say villain Carrie White.

THE GOOD

  • Fast paced story
  • Well developed characters
  • Different narrators gives a better perceptive to the story
  • Well written scenes

THE BAD

  • Some of the stuff may turn some readers off Menstrual blood, electrocutions, live burning

MY THOUGHTS

I enjoyed this book but it left me feeling sad. I felt bad and rooted for Carrie and wanted a happy ending for her. However this ending feels more realistic. All the Stephen King lovers and the movie fan don’t miss this one.

THE TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD BY J K ROWLING

0747599876_t

These tales were written by Rowling as gifts for her few close friends and then were published to the muggles next year because of the overwhelming  public demand .This was a book mentioned in the ‘Deathly Hallows’ so reading this book was a must for me.

STUFF ON THE BACK COVER SAYS

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore.

PLOT IN SHORT

It is a collection of 5 wizarding world fairy tales along with footnotes by Albus Dumbledore himself. Each tale has its own message which is further elaborated by our headmaster extraordinaire .

THE GOOD

  • EVERYTHING

THE BAD

  • It could have been longer or may I say never-ending?

MY THOUGHTS

This is something I will read to my children and grandchildren. It bought back so many childhood memories of practically growing up with Harry Potter. Loved every bit of it. Must read for all the Potterheads .

JURRASIC PARK BY MICHAEL CRICHTON

jurassic-park-michael-crichton-book-cover

Who hasn’t seen The Jurrasic Park movies? It completely blew my mind as a kid. I wanted to read this book ever since I came to know it existed. The book and the movies are responsible for the way we look at dinosaurs today and also at special effects in movies.

STUFF ON THE BACK COVER SAYS

A billionaire has created a technique to clone dinosaurs. From the DNA that his crack team of scientists extract, he is able to grow the dinosaurs in his laboratories and lock them away on an island behind electric fences, creating a sort of theme park. He asks a group of scientists from several different fields to come and view the park, but something goes terribly wrong when a worker on the island turns traitor and shuts down the power.

PLOT IN SHORT

A rich old guy and his biotech firm has cloned dinos and created a park for the public’s  entertainment and ofcourse to earn money. He puts together a bunch of people from different fields along with his 2 grandchildren to show off the park and its security. A disgruntled employee tries to leak out the parks secrets to a rival firm and kicks off the events that prove how dangerous dinos really are.

THE GOOD

  • Edge of your seat thriller
  • The concept is amazing
  • The story line is crisp and fast paced
  • The characters are memorable
  • Well researched work
  • Dinosaurs !!

THE BAD

  • Lot of science stuff may turn some readers off
  • The character of Lex is extremely annoying
  • Some loop holes maybe still found in technical aspects of palaeontology

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this book. I personally think Michael Crichton is a genius. The story, the setting, the characters are all very exciting. However I loved the movie too and can’t decide which one I liked better-the book or the movie. I saw the movie first and then read the book .This helped me understand the book better. A must read book for the lovers of sci-fi genre. This science-at-the-brink-of chaos thriller will not disappoint you.

MY RATINGS

4.8/5

a8e60899cacaf5f004ecb2498c344fb2

I read this series in my school days and really enjoyed at that point of time.the book and the movie are pretty different each with its own charm. I however enjoyed the book more than the movie.

STUFF ON THE BACKCOVER SAYS

Is she ever in for a surprise.

PLOT IN SHORT

The story of Mia Thermopolis’ adolescent turmoil as an average teenager and a princess of royal descent is chronicled in her on-going journal, where she explores topics of teenage angst, love, and betrayal through an opinionated eye.

The princess dairy – (volume 1)

Princess in waiting (volume 2)

Mia’s mommy is pregnant and her baby daddy is Mia’s algebra teacher. Both her grandmas are up to no good and also there is a secret admirer in the picture

Princess in love (volume 3)

A love triangle ends with a happy ending giving us major couple #goals and Grand’Mere turns likable.

Princess in waiting (volume 4)

Mia battles her insecurities about her love life, gets some more advice on royal affairs by Grand’Mere and finds her talent – writing.

THE GOOD

A funny young adult series

The concept of being a modern day princess is every teenage girl dream brought to life

The book endings will leave you feeling happy

Clever writing

THE BAD

Mia can be whinny and annoying at times

Lot of pop culture references may turn some readers off

Some parts might come across as pretentious

MY THOUGHTS

This series is for readers with a love for the chick-lit genre or for those looking for a easy breezy read. I loved the third book of this series and found the rest of them to be entertaining .Although this isn’t quite the ‘chicken soup for the soul’ Mia might help you deal with life’s problems a little bit better or maybe not. Read and find out for yourself.

MY RATINGS

3.8/5

WILD BY CHERYL STRAYED

Book-cover-Wild

This is one of those rare books that inspire you without being preachy and encouranging you to learn from her mistakes

Stuff on the backcover says

Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story, we tell ourself and so I choose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I safe . I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me. Fear begets fear. Power begets power. So I willed myself to beget power. And it wasn’t long before I actually wasn’t afraid..

Plot in short

Story of a young women undergoing an very physically taxing journey across a beautiful but hard hiking trail alone to help forgive her past mistakes and heal herself through an impulsive decision.

The good

Nice pace..excellent setting

Inspiring

The bad

The start is a little slow

Actual bagpackers might snort at her unpreparedness

My thoughts

A great book which gave me a new flawed heroine to look upto. There is something for everyone to take away from.
